‘Despicable Me 3’: Review
Gru is back with the Minions in the third installment of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise. But this time, there’s a twist there’s 2 Grus, Gru is side by side with his twin brother Dru. In this new film there’s less Minions than past sequels but a new villain is introduced. The new villain is Balthazar Bratt, a malcontent star of the 1980s cancelled TV show that had some pretty catchy soundtracks with the filmmakers repeating the same formula in the first installment of ‘Despicable Me’.
Where ‘Despicable Me 2’ left off we saw Gru, Lucy, the adopted kids, and the Minions reuniting .This new movie makes them part ways. Lucy attempts to become a mother to the kids, and the Minions are absolutely fed up with Guru and he is no longer the villain.. Gru later finds out that he has a twin brother named Dru, a villain who failed to live up to the perspectives of their super-villain father. The duo teams up to steal the world’s largest diamond from Balthazar Bratt, which allows Gru to go back to his roots.
It’s always fun to watch the Minions as they do offer a lot of laughter and cheesy popcorn moments. But the freshness of the original is lost somewhere in between the repetitive sequences and the separated sub-plots, though they are still enjoyable to a certain extent.
Much of the original cast and crew of the franchise reprises their roles in Despicable Me 3 and works like clockwork. Despicable Me had a strong emotional content and it was persistent in the second film too (the spin-off somewhat maintained it). But unfortunately, Despicable Me 3 lacks that strong emotional content. It doesn’t mean that the film does not have any emotional content, but something is missing for sure.
Baring all the above mentioned facts in mind, Despicable Me 3 has still got that likable charm (even though, not in its full glory) of the franchise. Don’t expect anything great from these movies as all they want is to just make us laugh and in that aspect, Despicable Me 3 is a winner.
