Big K.R.I.T ‘4eva Is A Mighty Long Time’: Review

Big KRIT is without a doubt one of the best independent artists in the US. At the same time rapper and beatmaker, it had been three years since he had released anything, an eternity in hip-hop in the digital era. But, to make up for this absence, the native of Mississippi doubly spoiled his fan base, with a double album titled 4Eva Is A Mighty Long Time . A project in which he put “his heart and his soul “. This one follows Cadillacta , released in 2014, himself coming after Live from the Underground swayed two years earlier.

The album is made up of a total of 22 tracks (11 per side)  Until the release, only three songs from this double-LP had been unveiled: “Confetti”, “Keep The Devil Off” & “Aux Cord”, a title beautifully produced by DJ Khalil .

Of course, to adorn this beautiful project, he appealed to a wide range of prestigious artists. TI , UGK, CeeLo Green and Sleepy Brown to represent the glory of Southern hip-hop from the 90s, but also Jill Scott , Joi , Bilal , Robert Glasper Jr. , Kenneth Whalum , Burniss Earl Travis II, LLoyd and Keyon Harrold for the rest of the cast. The first part o the album is more about party jams, while the second disc is more personal. This is a great album from start to finish. Stand out tracks are Subenstein, Justin Scott, Mixed messages and Bury me in gold.

“Get Up 2 Come Down” features Cee-Lo Green is politically fueled and i you heard his recent verse on David Banner’s ‘TheGodBox’ album that dropped this year, you can tell here the anger and passion on the track. “Ride Wit Me” goes back to a classic Southern hip hop feel that features Houston’s UGK (Underground Kingz) that’s a nod to the south.

One of our personal favorites is “The Light” that’s on Disc 2 and  features  R&B singer-songwriter Bilal, jazz pianist Robert Glasper Jr., Saxophone player Kenneth Whalum, and Burniss Earl Travis III on double-bass, that starts off with  jazz-fueled melody and rhythmic precision. The perfect track to close out the album was “Burty Me in Gold” that’s an powerful melodic gospel rap track to close things out on a beautiful note.

In addition to its lyrical ardor and authenticity, another strength of KRIT is its proximity to its audience. Indeed, he masters perfectly the art of social networks. In addition to regularly delivering excerpts on the web, he specialized in diverting many of them. An effective formula that allows him to maintain the hype of his until D-day. This day, we are there since 4Eva Is A Mighty Long Time no longer waiting for into to dive your ear. During the listening, do not hesitate also to take in both sides of the project which make up this great body of work by the Mississippi rapper.
