10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016

2015 gave us many box-office heavy weights, such as Avengers: Age of Ultron,Jurassic World, Furious 7 and the already-mentioned Star Wars: The Force Awakens,it also gave us some truly, and rightfully, critically acclaimed gems such as Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina.

2016 has had one hell of a gauntlet thrown down at its’ feet, but by the looks of things, it is more than up for the challenge. It is looking like the year of the superhero titans, as DC and Marvel go toe to spandex/metal plated toe with one another and pumping out at least SIX films between them! Some of these are included in my list, but not all of them.

So, here it goes, my Top 10 Movies that I’m looking forward to in 2016!

10: Assassin’s Creed

Michael Fassbender in the leading role.

Little is known plot-wise on this adaptation of the popular gaming franchise. What we do know is that Michael Fassbender stars as an entirely new character, Callum Lynch, and his Spanish ancestor, Aguilar.

I fell a bit behind with the series after III, but my love for the series, and the Ezio Trilogy in particular, remains to this day. I’m genuinely hoping for this to be a genuinely great video game adaptation, as we are severely lacking in that department!

Also, the idea of the Animus and reliving relatives memories through DNA is pure science-fiction porn rife with ideas on how to tackle it and ways it can be utilised for the big screen. I for one, am genuinely interest to see how this plays out. Michael Fassbender is a great actor with a solid track record, let us hope he can bring us gamers a quality adaptation that we’ve been longing for!

9. Now You See Me 2

A screenshot from the original movie.

I saw the first Now You See Me just out of curiosity as it was a DVD left for me and the family while we stayed in a holiday apartment in Cornwall last summer. We all watched it together and I have to say, it was one of the most surprisingly enjoyable films I’ve seen for a while!

Before it was “eh, looks alright” but I thoroughly enjoyed it, had a likeable cast, great action scenes, and a few neat little twists and turns that ended satisfyingly. Having watched the trailer, I’m interested to see where they take the team in this sequel. They’ve even thrown in Harry Potter for good measure! What isn’t to like? Expect more clever, elaborate tricks and some witty banter between the magicians in what I’m sure will be a very good movie indeed.

8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 yes i ve got jokes this is not one of them 785976 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Yes, I’ve got jokes, this is not one of them.

Now don’t come at me with keyboard pitchforks or anything…but I kind of enjoyed the first movie. THERE, I SAID IT. IT WASN’T THAT BAD. I enjoyed it more than I ought to have done, plot wasn’t anything mind-bending, but it was what it set out to be, a flashy summer flick.

Now, even though I was interested in seeing a sequel, but wasn’t sure I’d watch it in cinemas. Casting Stephen Amell as Casey Jones piqued my interests, but once I watched the teaser trailer…my outlook on this movie altered significantly. It genuinely looks fantastic.

The mix of nostalgic soundtrack (Run-DMCs’ It’s Tricky is awesome) and some pretty solid looking action sequences, it looks to up the ante on it’s predecessor and go large! I’m anticipating more or less the same level (or lack of) plot but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it all the same.

The thing with the Turtles movies and the Transformers movies for me is that I grew up watching them on TV, so to see them on the big screen makes me feel like a kid all over again.

7. Suicide Squad

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 squad goals 786628 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Squad goals.

Are we classing this as a Superhero movie? Probably not. DC’s own wretched collection of scum and villainy take to the big screen this August, and has somebig names attached to it. Just from looking at the screenshot above we’ve got Will Smith as Deadshot, the beautiful Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Boomerang. While I’m yet to be fully convinced by Jai’s abilities as an actor, he has done some big movies, and I’m sure he can only get better. We’ve also got Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, who people will know from the remarkably average RoboCop remake.

However, the most controversial of the lot isn’t seen here, of course, I’m talking about Jared Leto as the Joker. Both a highly rated actor and the lead singer of Alternative Rock band 30 Seconds To Mars, he is without a doubt a man of many talents.

But obviously, what has people talking is how Jared’s interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime looks. The first images of him broke the comic book internet and was subject to many a complaint. I myself have grown accustom to his…unusual look.

Each rendition of the Joker has to be distinct from all the others, if he looked too much like Heath Ledger’s Joker, there’d be criticism they were ripping off his character and tarnishing his reputation. I feel we’ve got the most psychotic version of the Joker yet if the trailer and promo photos are anything to go by, obviously time will tell! The only reason this isn’t higher is simply because I do not know much about the Suicide Squad outside of the movie and from coming up against some of them in Batman: Arkham Asylum.

6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 some of the cast of the 1st star wars spinof 786664 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Some of the cast of the 1st Star Wars spinoff.

Achieving its place in my Top 10 purely because of my love for Star Wars. Rogue One is telling a story that we think we know, but we only know the basic facts: one small group of Rebels steal the technical plans to the Death Star, an event which kick starts the entire original trilogy that we hold so dearly in our hearts. I was quite skeptical about the addition of spinoff movies on top of the Sequel trilogy, but the more I think about it, the more I realise I want this story to be told. The cast seems pretty decent, Felicity Jones is an okay actress, but seeing Mads Mikkelsen in Star Wars has got me very intrigued.

Before I break down my Top 5 of 2016, I have one gripe with the reports surrounding this movie. Nearly every single report I see about Rogue One, someone is trying to funny with their headlines “joking” about how many Bothans died to bring them this information. I see what you’re trying to do there, but come on, the dead Bothans gave us the information for the SECOND Death Star, not the first. Literally any good Star Wars fan should know that. So please, shut up, you’re making yourself look silly. Thank you. 🙂

5. Deadpool

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 not sure which load to expect more to be ho 786698 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Not sure which load to expect more, to be honest.

You could argue that Deadpool isn’t further up this list, and you’re absolutely right to question me for only putting him 5th. My reasoning is simply because there is less than a month until it releases, so there isn’t much wait. But boy oh boy, is there hype.

Now I’m not one who read many comics (unfortunately, no particular reason) but I know plenty about the character of the Merc with a mouth and why people hated how they butchered him at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, a lot of people seemed to agree that Ryan Reynolds was the man for the job should they do it properly, and the previews have absolutely convinced me of that. This film has had some of the best pre-release marketing I’ve ever seen and it is good to see them truly embracing the wit of Deadpool himself. Even to the extent of providing us with some of the most divisive promo posters you could ever expect from a “superhero” movie.

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 trust me she ll love it 790001 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Trust me, she’ll love it.

I’m assuming that Deadpool will be at least be rated 15 when it comes out, which is great, as they can leave in the gore and cut out the annoying little 12 year olds who all think mummy will be taking them to see it for their birthday, brilliant!

4. Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 when the enemy squad is op 790022 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
When the enemy squad is OP.

I’ve always leaned towards Marvel over DC, with the exception of The Dark Knight Trilogy. The thought of Batman taking on Superman had got fans salivating at the mouth at the mere thought since the announcement, and rightly so. I think they’ve got a great casting choice in Ben Affleck as an older, grittier Batman. Say what you want about his past projects (i.e. DareDevil) but I have always considered him a great actor who gets more stick than he deserves.

I am still a bit weary of how many characters Warner Brothers are trying to squeeze into only their second movie of DC’s Expanded Universe, but I’m sure it has been handled with enough care that it will be pulled off. Besides, they can’t afford to lose any more ground on Marvel, this looks like the movie that will bring them right back into contention with one another.

The person I’m most intrigued to seeing besides the title characters is Wonder Woman, played by the simply beautiful Gal Gadot, mostly known from her role in the Fast & Furious franchise. Assuming people take to her portrayal of the character, it will generate some great hype for her solo movie, due out June 23rd 2017. That is one film I’ll be seeing regardless.

3. Independence Day: Resurgence

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 certainly beats the original title forever 790076 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Certainly beats the original title, “Forever”

1996’s Independence Day remains one of my favourite movies to this very day. Starring a top-form Will Smith, Bill Pullman and the fantastic Jeff Goldblum, who basically is a god in his own right.

Again, I was wary when they first announced sequels, especially with the awfultitles they gave them, ID Forever Part I & II, and even more worried by the fact Will Smith wasn’t returning, gutted. However, the new trailer has convinced me that not only have they taken the story in a logical way, but it looks to out do the original in every single way.

I found the use of Pullman’s speech in the new trailer particularly effective, echoing how they are well and truly facing annihilation, and not just because I still think it’s one of the best movie speeches ever. Honest. We’ve got some fresh faces added to the cast with Liam Hemsworth and Sandra Bullock, which is great. I think a good blend of the old and the new will surely make this movie a hit when it releases in the summer. Consider me pumped.

2. Captain America: Civil War

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 when banter with the squad gets out of hand 790806 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
When banter with the squad gets out of hand.

Would this list really be complete without this? Marvel have been on a (mostly) upward climb since the first Iron Man came out way back in 2008. Yes, 2008. It’s been EIGHT YEARS since the MCU began. Mental.

Now I actually have read the comic version of Civil War (decided to educate myself) and I can see why fans believe this film has a lot to live up to. Though personally I think it is a wise move from the Russo brothers to sidestep and do their own rendition, if only because it is simply impossible to replicate, god damn movie rights! And while it features even more characters that were in last year’s already jam-packed Age Of Ultron, it simply will not be on the scale of the comic, which even thinking about it would be bloody hard to pull off on-screen successfully. I’m still undecided as to who my own allegiances lie with in the build up to release. I think I agree with Captain America in principles, but then Iron man, RDJ, is just too awesome. So I’ll probably make my mind up when I’m in the cinema!

Though while we’re talking about it I do believe Cap has had the strongest track record of solo films in the MCU so far. I think The First Avenger doesn’t get as much praise these days as it deserves, though that’s probably because it is followed by The Winter Soldier which is not only the best Marvel movie to date, but still one of the best films I’ve seen. Civil War has a lot on its shoulders, but this is Marvel, somehow, they’ll handle it.

So. What is number one?

I’m glad you asked, dear reader. What could I possibly have chosen over all these films to be the number one movie I am looking forward to this year?

You might be a bit surprised. Or you might have asked why it isn’t already in my list…

Here it is!

1. X-Men: Apocalypse

top 10 movies i m looking forward to in 2016 oscar isaac as the titular villain 796511 - 10 Movies That We're Looking Forward To In 2016
Oscar Isaac as the titular villain.

I was excited for X-Men: Apocalypse anyway, Fox have Days Of Future Past to thank for that. DoFP was easily the best X-Men film since X2, maybe even full stop, it’s a toughy. Anyway, I like how they’re keeping with the First Class group, reintroducing Jean Grey and bring Jubilee into the mix, she was my favourite on the old 90s TV show, remember? The one with the badass theme tune? Yeah, that’s the one.

It’ll be interesting to see how the newbies fair against the literal daddy (insert sex joke here) of all the mutants. Judging by the trailer, which is phenomenal I might add, they don’t do too well. Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen look like they’re going to tear s*** up!

I’ve seen a few people mock the look of Oscar Isaac in costume, claiming he looks like an old Power Rangers villain (I’ve seen the comparison, and it is quite funny). But come on guys, he still looks freaking cool, hence why I chose the above still from the trailer, as he looks quite menacing and intimidating.

I wouldn’t mind if the movie kept to the really dark, end of the world vibe of the teaser trailer. The music added so much tension in those few minutes and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Let us see a mutant war. Let us see plenty of destruction. LET US SEE APOCALYPSE (Now).
