“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the latest chapter of the highly popular franchise, debuted with a massive $ 450 million in global ticket sales over the weekend, distributor Walt Disney Co said. Sunday.
The total includes $ 220 million in the United States and Canada, the second largest national opening of all time behind the 2015 movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The film’s debut is another hit for Disney, which bought “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm in 2012 and revitalized the famous movie saga that began in 1977.
“Ultimate Jedi” features the final performance of actress Carrie Fisher as Leia, the princess who became a general leader of the resistance forces against evil first order. Fisher died of a heart attack in December 2016.
